Review: Manicure at Milly's

Saw a great deal on Groupon (my current favourite site, FYI!!!) just a week before I left for Perth: $20 for Classic Pedi/Medi at Milly's, U.P: $45! I knew I had to get it.

I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to getting my manicure and pedicure done because I own a lot of OPI colors at home and I'm all for DIY. (I'm crazy, I change my colors once a week, twice if I've time) So when I saw this deal, I purchased it! I paid $60 for 3 classic mani/pedi sessions.

Where?: Milly's, currently they've got 2 outlets: Far East Plaza (#03-129) & Bugis Village, L2 new extension

What?: They not only provide mani/pedi services, you can get your hair extensions, eyelash perming and other beauty services done there as well. Much raved by Local bloggers/personalities: Bong Qiu Qiu, Yan Kaykay, Fidelis Toh and much more. (yes, I stalk them on twitter.)

The experience:

I opted for my first session to be at Bugis Village, thought I'd shop for a bit before heading in. I made my appointment 2 weeks earlier to avoid any disappointment. Like the fact that they provide a HP number to SMS for convenience's sake. Have yet to try how responsive they are on text though..

Anyway, I got there 15 minutes earlier, the shop was rather empty; could be because of the rain. The shop front wasn't fancy, I immediately felt I was transported to Bangkok because there were some staffs conversing in crisp Thai. They were the hair extensions girls. I giggled because I truly miss being in BKK for it's glorious shopping and food. I was greeted nicely by 2 girls who directed me to take a seat and was told to pick my colors.

I asked if the manicurist doing my hands if they had any new colors from OPI, surprisingly (and disappointingly) they don't. Can't help but feel that she just want to get the job done. They've got quite an extensive choice of colors. 2 different shades of red that I picked ran out, I was disappointed again because it's extremely annoying when you're trying out a new place and they don't have what you want. But then again, given that red is a rather popular choice of color. The manicurist was quite nice to help pick 2 shades similar to what I initially wanted.

Outcome: Overall, they did ok. Manicurist working on my hands didn't paint the inner corners entirely but it isn't that noticeable unless you really scrutinise but that's kinda not the point... Manicurist helping out with my toes did a fine job and she cleaned me up well. I think the experience could have been better enhanced if they were more chatty towards me than among themselves. I still have 2 more sessions to go, perhaps I'll have a better experience at the FEP outlet!

Review: Evolu Exoliating Body Polish

I've had this tube of goodness for over months and I only managed to try it now. Got to know this organic New Zealand skin care brand from work and was given this to me as a gift from a sweet colleague. I've personally met founder of Evolu, Kati Kasza, who's got such a great spirit and personality! She believes in the power of equilibrium to promote healthy skin. According to Kati, every pure, bioactive product in the Evolu range is specifically blended to help achieve and maintain your skin's ideal balance.

If you're like me, you live in a country that's 24/7 HOT and HUMID, you've got to try this.

What is it?: Evolu exfoliating body polish consist of crushed walnut and kiwi seeds to help slough off dead skin cells, which works amazingly well! What I love most about this product is it contain New Zealand lavender, eucalyptus and menthol that leave your skin cool, refreshed and a tingling sensation that works best in a hot weather. In fact after 30 minutes, I can still feel the cooling sensation on my skin.

I used it on rough areas such as elbows (ugh, never understood why they're so rough!!!), knees and my back. If you're always in the sun, you might want to get a full back scrub with this glorious product because not only does it help cool down sun burns, it also removes all the gunk on your back which will help reduce acne :)

I occasionally use it on my chest because I'm rather prone to acne there as well.

Pros: Affordable, most Evolu products are in the range of $30 - $40 for their basic skin care which I think is extremely inexpensive judging that it's an organic skin care brand. You'll also be happy to know that all Evolu products are cruelty-free, contain no parabens, petrochemicals, minerals, phthalates, sulfats, artificial colours or fragrances, and no animal products other than beeswax and lanolin!

Cons: I absolutely love this body polish to death, I can't find anything to hate about it. Ok, maybe 1 thing....... I always wind up with a lot of kiwi seeds on my bathroom floor. #justsaying

Where to find Evolu in SG?: You can find them at all major Guardian Pharmacies and John Little.

Go get it, you can thank me later. ;) Have yourself a glorious Sunday!

Blouse: Cotton on / Denim Skirt: KMart @ Perth

I'm not emotionally ready to go back to work but here I am. Was away for a week and my emails piled up to 257. Thank god for amazing colleagues who covered my duties while I'm away! I reckon I should get down to posting Perth pictures soon. Hope you guys are having an awesome mid week.

Perth City

Hi!

As I type this entry, I'm resting my feet from all that walking and shopping. Man, I think I've walked off all the carbs we ate today!

Daleth dropped me off at Perth city and met up with the ever so lovely Sarah O! She brought me to most of the shops selling all the girlie stuff and of course, we both headed to the SALE section first. Wouldn't say the discount was awesome. Probably the cheapest thing I got today was 2 cardigans at Jay Jays for A at $5AUD each. I got myself a full-leather bag for $90AUD! Super love.

Anyway, realise I didn't shop that much after pouring out my loot on my bed. Shopping in Perth is waaaaaay too expensive. When am I going BKK again? =| Hint hint.

I had fun today! Updated Sarah about me and so did she. I hope this pretty young thing finds true love and be happy. Cliche, I know.

Heading to Subi market & Claremont tomorrow. It's gonna be another awesome day, I reckon. Can't believe I'm heading back to SG in another 3 days. :(

Fremantle & Victoria Park

Mike brought me to Fremantle (apparently people call it Freo?) despite still feeling sick which I probably will be eternally grateful. The weather today was unfortunately rainy BUT it was waaaaay better than yesterday's blazing HOT sun. Both Mike and myself felt so much better today though I had to toughen up to brave through the rain.

I did some good shopping! Valley girl, dayum. Headed down to Victoria Park hoping to shop somemore but the rain was such a bitch. Mike brought me to a thrift store - true blue one judging from the smell of old, mouldy clothes hehe, I got myself a book for $4! We also saw someone who looked like Snoop Dog.

Thank you Mike, for showing me around these 2 days! You're such a gem. I like counting your wrinkles. ;D

Right now I'm just enjoying the cold weather and watching Law & Order on telly. Life should be like that everyday.

MORE shopping with Sarah tomorrow. Should be glorious.

Anyway before I head off to bed, let me leave you with the most refreshing blog entry I've read to date - one that makes the most sense so far - http://goinswriter.com/travel-young/

Life's too short to worry. Yes, life beckons and you never found the courage to leave your shit job, sleep in your small apartment, a car that won't start and not having enough sex; when will you stop from all that madness and live your life the way you should be? This trip to Perth truly opened my eyes a lot more. I find myself saying this often - Yea, I wanna travel! I want to go to Europe! Japan! Blah blah blah blah but never got down to make any of that happen. From this moment on, I'm gonna start saving and travel the world! For real.

Hot hot hot

Hello, this is me blogging miles away from home, in Perth. Thought this deserves an entry since I've got the night to spare.

It's been a crazy ride, alright? The past weeks for me have been ridiculous. And I fucking mean it. Other than my infections coming back to haunt me like a muthafarker, 3 days Women's Fair at Marina Square WHILE plagued with infections wasn't my kind of fun. Headed back to work with only a day to handover everything to Micque before I fly the next morning (Geez, almost couldn't due to the Qantas strikes. Seriously. What. The. Hell.).

So.......... yup here I am resting my skin and feet in a quiet suburb in Western Australia.

Perth has been......................... hot. The weather's crazy. I think it's hotter here than in SG, less humid though but the heat is just.. driving me nuts. I make sure I keep myself hydrated throughout the day. AND THE DAMN FLIES. Jesus, they are everywhere. When I told Mike there weren't any in SG unless someone kept food out in the open for days, he seem shocked.

Anyway, other than the heat, I'm pretty much enjoying myself being away from work and alone. I miss home, local food, and my bed. Everyone here's so friendly and I love Target, KMART and Woolsworth!!!

Hope everyone's good wherever you are. I'm safe and enjoying a lot more fun than you. :P

Straight or crooked

It's ok to judge but just keep it to yourself.

RIP Little Yue Yue

I'm sure many of you have heard of hit-and-run case of Little Yue Yue in China, Fuzhou.

I've to say I'm still in major disgust thinking about it and felt even worse when I read on Friday night that the poor little 2 year old toddler has passed away simply because her body couldn't fight anymore. Her brain was so damaged that many parts of her body (limbs, lungs, immune system) can no longer function.

I find it extremely painful to admit that such things still happen in this world. And if as a person, we can't help our fellow human being, what would we do if it was a dog in this situation instead? I can't imagine. There are just many elements to this tragedy that upsets me. As I was watching the video, the father of Yue Yue appeared to look extremely calm which I found it rather strange. I had a talk with my mom and she simply said - Because she's a girl. WHAT? Am I hearing it right? We're living in year 2011 and we still practice such traditional values of 重男轻女 (preferring sons over daughters)?? My mom added that perhaps the father could get over it fast because they can always have another kid. I'm not a feminist but I felt offended. Maybe I overreacted.

Growing up in a huge family (my grandma has 7 children, my mother's the 3rd daughter), I've always never been my Grandma's favorite grandchild. I didn't take a second to wonder why because it was clear to me that it was really because I'm a girl and I can't carry the surname of the family. My grandma's face would lit up at the sight of my cousin who's the first and eldest grandson of the family. Don't get me wrong, I love my grandma nonetheless; and growing up I accepted that this is how things are going to be.

Anyway, this post is dedicated to Little Yue Yue and her devastated parents whom probably might never get over this ordeal.

Rest in peace, Yue Yue. Your story was heard/seen/felt by millions all over the world and though we've never met; your story has touched and angered me. I'm sorry you had to go through this. You were a strong little soldier, you know? I bet nobody expected you to last 8 days in ICU, fighting to stay alive; but you did. I know you're off to a better place - with cotton candy clouds, mashmellow pillows and a mountain of toys. I hope your case finds justice and the person who did this to you to be put behind bars to repent for what he has done.

P for Paradise?

Got into the office earlier to finish up some work and it suddenly dawned onto me that I've leaving for Perth in a week?! Worse part is I've ALOT of work not done. I'm pretty excited to fly alone though!

Just minutes ago I'm frantically checking on "Things to do in Perth" HAHAHAH. Talk about last minute planning. I'm so not a planner. But I kinda like the 'we'll see how it goes' swag I've going on right now. I know, I'm deluded.

Can't wait to see the following places in Perth that's.. er FREEEEEE!! #3 and #4 are not free, I think?

1) King's Park
Ok.. just greens....... definitely nicer than Botanical Gardens in SG!

2) Cottlesloe Beach
Am I hearing picnic?!?!?!? Wine but no cheese.

3) Caversham Wildlife Park
Gonna have 'close encounters' with Kangeroos, y'all.

4) Perth Zoo
Read #3, just see a lot more other animals.

Anyway, I think it's gonna be swell. Have a great weekend!

Black and white

There are some heads that are cute, while black and white heads surfacing on your t-zone, nose (UGH!) and chin ARE GROSS. I've been using Etude house's green tea nose pore pack for awhile now and it has served me very well. It's also very cheap, 90cents a piece which can be purchased singularly so you don't need to commit to buying a whole pack of 5 pieces if it doesn't work for you.

I was at NEX mall yesterday and walked in to Etude House to get some cos my nose has got too much gunk! To my horror, they are sold out NATION WIDE. Obviously I was devastated. But not for too long, hee. Skinfood was just situated next to Etude, I decided to give them a shot. I mean what can be so bad right? The beauty advisor recommended me to get their star product - Skinfood Black beans nose pack. Comes in a pack of 7 and priced at $12.80.

Skinfood's known for using very natural ingredients in their products and for a korean brand it's quite costly. (For a tub of face mask can cost up to $41) I've never really used anything by them other than a sample tube of Rice mask I tried the other time which wasn't too bad. I've heard raves about it. I didn't see results because I didn't have the patience to try it over a period of time.

They have the exact same 'green tea-ish' smell when you peel the pack off and put it on your nose. I didn't find the smell overpowering (I've read many bloggers wrote that it stinks lol). It was manageable. It states to leave it on for 15 mins till its dry and true enough when it's about time you can actually feel the 'suction' from it? Like it's really removing all the GUNK!

When I stripped it off my nose, to my horror/amazement.. A LOT of gunk was pulled out! Like A LOT. I was horrified that my nose had that much gunk on it.

Here's a pic to prove. HAHAHA

Photobucket

Can you see how much gunk's on it? I'm truly amazed!

My Verdict:

I'm very impressed with the results just by ONE application. My nose was a lot cleaner than before, though there are still much more to clear but it has to be done over time unless you want a major break out. Overall, I'm a happy customer. I'll definitely buy again once I run out.

Pros:
  1. Easy application. Just follow the blardy steps ok?
  2. Instructions were thoroughly clear. It actually gave good advice! At the back of the pack it did say if you're living in a humid/warm climate, keep it on for 15 mins and cold climate, 10 mins. This is so you don't dry out your skin.
  3. The Etude house green tea nose pack couldn't reach the inner corners of my nose which annoyed me much. This Skinfood black bean nose pack managed to pull out all the gunk at all corners. Got me pretty much covered!
Cons:
  1. The smell is not for everybody. It's manageable for me though.
  2. Rather expensive in my opinion. There are definitely cheaper alternatives. Like Biore, Etude house..
  3. Not sure if you can buy 1 piece a time. If we can't then its wastage if this product doesn't work for you as it comes in a pack of 7!
Ok back to work, till next time! xo A

Let's go tangerine

I've always wanted an Orange lipstick and I was happy to find it at Topshop. ;)
I really love this shade. It's such a cheerful color it can brighten up any dress down outfit! Or days when you don't feel like putting on too much make up. I can look a little sickly cos my lip color can be really nude-ish. It's rather velvety in texture and glides on very easily on your lips. This gorgeous hue - Infrared, is available at Topshop for $19 SGD

Go bold this Summer!

Experience VS Enthusiasm

Happy Labour Day, everyone! Hope it was a good and well-rested one for you.

Anyway, what's hot in town now? General Elections of course. Even Osama Bin Laden's death can't help feeling neglected in Singapore. (Y U NO SHOW ME LURVVVEEEE???)

I know being 23, my opinions may not be always heard but here's my 2 cents worth on GE. I'm usually not that affected by what's going on in the political world but I've to say it's shaking the earth my stepping on. Well, just a tiny bittttttttttttt.

I'm getting excessively annoyed by people who are biting the hands who helped feed them. Do you remember how Singapore was just a piece of land where NOONE knew of? Do you remember how the nation struggled separating ourselves from our neighbour, Malaysia? Who was there for us throughout every step of the way? It none other than MM Lee Kuan Yew.

In a recent interview at Tampines, MM Lee warned Singaporeans especially those under Aljunied GRC - to vote wisely. And throughout his speech, he used strong words such as 'repent' and 'pay the price'. This has caused some uproar among netizens sprouting that MM Lee's choice of vocabulary lack of tact and made it sound like a threat to the citizens.

I'm like... really? I do agree that it was a strong choice of vocab but the Elections IS a huge deal. Our lives for the next 5 years highly depends on who we vote for. There was 1 point MM Lee brought up which I strongly agree with - What are you voting for? Are you voting for experience OR enthusiasm? Do you want a group of people with experience to help run the country or a group of people with so much passion and enthusiasm but has actually NEVER run a country before? So, what's your choice?

This is not a company where you can liquify and end it but what can you do to a nation when it's not doing well? YOU CANNOT COMPARE APPLE AND ORANGE, PLEASE. Do not risk the nation just because you're touched by their passion and the things they say they would do. Please do not do it at other people's expense. It's not fair. It's not fair to ruin other people's lives like that.

Please take a second to ask yourself - Have you been living poorly? Do you not have a roof above your head? Are you doing THAT badly where you need to overthrow who's leading?

Think about it people, think.

What's new

Hmmm. I like the fact that this week is such a short work week. (triple yay!)

Perks of the job: Be part of Marc by Marc Jacobs fashion show last Tuesday. It was sooo good. I like that their spring 2011 collection has so many wearable pieces. Ultimate lust. They're a burst of colors and a good balance of neural hues like grey.

Do you want to know how they recreate all that frizz?

Tadah! (Snapped by my trusty BB bold)

Anyway, so what's new? I'm officially a year older. (haaaaappppyyyyy birthdaaaaaay to meeeeeee) Bummer. But this year despite having most of the usual suspects not in town - I still managed to feel loved. Ally and Sammie came by with cake while I had my clay mask on (IMAGINE THE HORROR?!). I was literally unable to laugh or smile. It was funny though. This birthday I really don't want much - I just want to be happier than before.

Talk when I've something exciting to update.
You have all my love xxxxx

You know, I'm such an impulsive shopper?

They've got free international shipping till 1pm (SG time) for today only! (... I mean if anybody's reading at all?)

2 months, 8 weeks, 61 days

Many have asked me time and time again, "Are you ok? How are you dealing with the break up?". A month ago, I was shrugging it off, talking about it here and there and today I finally felt like I could talk about it. You know, without hate.

The breakup wasn't immediate like a tsunami, it felt like a slow and deadly flesh-eating disease that chew me inside out over time. There were couple times I couldn't deal with it at all, I had to hide under sheets and cry but these days I don't cry so much anymore. I still think about the past some times but it doesn't hurt anymore. That's progress, IMO.

I don't know about him. A month after the breakup, I decided to unfollow him on twitter which honestly helped me A LOT. They were right, if you really want to get over someone, you need to stay away from the person even if it means virtually. Facebook updates were a hit and miss.

In short, the breakup didn't uprooted my life. I was very fortunate. It just uprooted me from all that compromising state I was in. I was really rolling in the deep. I am scarred but I believe some day someone's gonna walk me out of it. Out of all that second guessing and insecurity. He just didn't want to be the one and it's okay.

It's been 2 months equivalent of 8 weeks and equivalent of 61 days...... I'm clean of the achin'.

On Stranger Tides

I cannot live without painting my nails. When my nails are naked, I feel like I am too. And I swear by O.P.I. I like the fact that O.P.I brings a dash of fun and pop culture to nail polish by collaborating with famous celebrities and hit televisions series.

Inspired by the highly anticipated Disney movie "Pirates of the Caribbean: On stranger tides", O.P.I launches 6 mystical colors that embody the wild escapades of Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz.

OPI "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" Sikver Shatter nail polish.

OPI "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" nail polish in Steady As She Rose, Sparrow Me the Drama and Planks a Lot.

OPI "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" nail polish in Skull & Glossbones, Stranger Tides and Mermaids Tears.

The colors are inspired by a world filled with mythical mermaids, gleaming treasure and high-seas adventures. With shades ranging from safe and lavender to Khaki gray and pastal pink, these colors are evocative of a warm, tropical setting, with a classic nautical influence, says Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI executive VP and artistic director

Which color are you lusting for? I particularly love Mermaids Tears and Steady as she rose! Can't wait to get my hands on them when I see them in Singapore.

Happy April's Fool Day!

Wonder woman for M.A.C

I'm always thrilled to see who MAC collaborates with next. Behind this strong force this month is iconic DC comics' Wonder Woman. Extremely sexy and powerful, I say. It is clear that MAC and Wonder Woman's mission is to transform plain janes across the universe into powerful individuals who aren't afraid to don on bright colors and feel confident.

I'm a proud owner of the 2 colors on the far right. Don't be sad if the red is OOS everywhere, it is one of their regular colors - Russian Red. The rest is, sadly, limited edition. Don't forget to get your hands on one of these lovelies when it's launched store wide in SG from 10 March onwards!

Long time no see

How's everyone? It's almost Friday, chins up.

Here are some things that make me happy this week:

1) Got a pair of brown platforms from New Look
2) Made plans to party this coming Friday! Woohoo.
3) My new O.P.I color obsession: NL F15 You don't know Jacques!

Caught "I'm Number Four" on Monday, it was pretty entertaining. Though I seriously can't stand the way Diana Argon speaks, it's like she has holes in her throat and air's constantly escaping when she talks.

The Dark Knight Rises

There are so much talk about Anne Hathaway scoring villain role in Christopher Nolan's blockbuster film - The Dark Knight Rises. Read the Alleycaat's take here.

I was a little shocked at first with Nolan's pick. Hathaway has always been the Princess Diaries girl in my head. In my impression, she's that doe-eyed brunette with the winning smile who would nail every chick flick. But recently, she started taking on serious roles in films such as Rachel gets Married and the most recent Love & other drugs. I'm mesmerized a little and I'm supportive of the change in career directions but can she really nail Catwoman? First of all there will be running tongues of comparison between her and Michelle Pfeiffer. There's almost NO comparison because Pfeiffer brought the cat alive.

So.. I'm not sure. However pictures of Hathaway in her kitty costume for The Dark Knight Rises is kinda hot. She actually looks different! I almost couldn't see shadows of Princess diaries! Well, till we finally catch the film we won't know how she fares. Do you think she can be the purrrrr-fect fit?

We'll see.

Lippies for me

I always envy mothers and daughters who goes shopping together, talk about make up and all that girlie stuff - I never had that. My mom's too much of a tom cat. Me, on the other hand is girlie as hell. HAHA I know right. Since young, make up to me is like the forbidden fruit. I'm always fascinated by the colors and how it can make your cheeks look so rosy with a brush. Makeup is really a very experimental thing for every girlie girl. At different stages of your life, you experiment different things. It took me 2 years to experiment mascara and eyeliner. And recently, I found the beauty in lippies!

I've outgrown lipbalms and glosses. I feel so grown up playing with different shades of lippies and it's always good to invest in a good lipstick. These days I even feel naked without it! ;D During the office sale, I got myself 3! (at dirrrrrrt cheap prices, of course)

This new year, I'm going to stock up on more lippies!

the littlest things

We want a lot of things. Ok let me narrow this down. We want or expect a lot from our partners. Especially from the one you have (in my case, crazy) thoughts walking down the aisle with. We really expect a lot. (quit saying no, it's the truth and you know it)

The media has changed our mindsets over time with advertisements, movies, prints and music. We start to emote, worry, sulk, frustrate over things that we can't have. We began to wonder why can that lead actress end up with a prince and I can't? I want that happy ending too. But can I? So you start wishing and your wish list gets too damn fuckin' long.

What do you expect from your man? The 5Cs? That expensive car? The kind that jumps infront of a train for you? Take a bullet for you? What do you expect from your man?

I used to expect a lot from my man because I thought I was in the position to demand. But when life takes place and things happen, you gradually demand less and modify your list.

Couple hours ago I sat down and I thought about what I really want in my man. It used to be a long list but now it has come to wanting a man who's responsible for his own life, includes me in his plans, hold basic conversations with me everyday, make time for me when he can and most importantly place me close to his heart.

Now, realistically go think about what you expect from your partner. If the first thing that comes to your mind is - he/she must earn twice as much as you then you really haven't seen the worst or you haven't really love.

Good night, y'all. Have a great week ahead!

100th Post - Find a muse

I am going to dedicate my 100th post to a recent muse I found - Lykke Li.

I'm very drawn to whispery, echo-y voices, especially those very difficult to copy. Lykke Li is one of a kind. And I've to admit, I love "powdered sugar pop". She first caught my attention when I first heard - I'm good I'm gone.

Embedding is not allowed, so view it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJHdT1j6hH8&feature=related

Lykke Li's a young Swedish singer. She's quite a nomad. The family moved to Stockholm when Li was a toddler and later moved to a mountaintop in Portugal when Zachrisson was six, where they lived for five years; the family also spent time in Lisbon and Morocco and spent winters in Nepal and India. She moved to the neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn in New York for three months when she was 19. She returned when she was 21 to record her album.

I find her tunes mostly speak about her broken yet prideful heart. Sometimes she sings about sweet revenge but deep down she's yearns to be love. She's into live music, good acoustic, confined spaces.. I like her.

Another fav track by Lykke Li - Everybody but me:

Do check her out on youtube!

Happy weekend, everyone.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year.

(I still) Don't really quite know what to say (my 2010 entry still stuck in my drafts folder) but every part of me just want to say "Thank you" to those who didn't give up on me half way. Your support (in any kind) is so greatly appreciated.

To those who saw me cry during my hardest times in 2010,
To those who laughed with me during my happiest times in 2010,
To those who are always there,

Thank you very much.

PS: this is not an excuse to not finish my 2010 entry. I will, I guess? Just not sure when. 2010 was a tough year.
